NBA Selects All-Star Game Cities Well in Advance
The Yanks’ NBA has announced that the 2022 All-Star game, which falls on the 75th anniversary, will be played in Cleveland, Ohio.
Oh No! Not Ohio!
The NBA All-Star game is played in the middle of the season, which puts it right in the dead of winter, which of all the bad times to find oneself in Cleveland, is the worst possible.
Cleveland last hosted the All-Star game in 1997. That coincided with the 50th anniversary of the league. The pattern would suggest that Cleveland would get the game again in 2047 for the 100th anniversary.
Current NBA Commissioner Adam Silver said when making the announcement, “Cleveland is a passionate sports city with a proven track record of hosting large-scale, global events. We look forward to a weeklong celebration of our game.”
Cleveland could be classified as the loveable losers of U.S. professional sports. They have the Browns in the NFL and the Indians in MLB. The Browns last won a championship in 1964, two years prior to the last time the St. Kilda Saints won a premiership.
The Indians last won a World Series in 1948, although they did win the American League Pennant in 2016 and they put up quite a battle before bowing to the Chicago Cubs. The Cubbies, in winning, broke a 108-year duck.
As for the NBA Cavaliers, they won the NBA championship in 2016, ending over 50 years of futility for Cleveland professional sports franchises.
Silver said further, without a hint of levity, “The world will get to see the modern Cleveland and all of its diversity, innovation and promise for the future.”
All Star Game 2018
The All-Star game for the 2018 – 2019 season will be held in Charlotte, North Carolina, which is far more pleasant than Cleveland as a winter destination.
Melbourne’s Ben Simmons should be a lock to play this year’s All-Star game. He was snubbed last year, even though he was routinely posting numbers better than some of the players selected, hurt only by his rookie status.
The players take selection seriously, even if it is mostly ceremonial, but if we were Simmons and we were picked for Cleveland in 2022, we would feign a bad hamstring.
